MBA PhD (Turnaround Management)
Sello is a Certified Turnaround Professional and licensed senior Business Rescue Practitioner, with nearly 30 years’ working experience, having worked in senior and executive management positions. His working experience was gained in various aspects of finance, such as corporate banking, corporate finance, auditing and accounting, project finance and private equity.
Sello’s career started in 1988 as a trainee accountant at Deloitte (audit). He subsequently worked in senior financial and management positions at National Sorghum Breweries, Telkom and SAB, prior to entering the world of investment banking, where he held positions at ABN Amro, WipCapital and Nedbank. It was during his investment banking years that he first became involved in turnarounds.
He subsequently ran an investment company for a union, which he restructured and repositioned for growth based on a private equity model. He then became involved in a boutique corporate advisory and project finance company, working mostly on cross-border projects, doing work in Botswana, Kenya, South Sudan, Zimbabwe, Guinea, Malawi as well as the DRC.
Sello spent a number of years advising municipalities on revenue models and developing a funding model for infrastructure projects. The latter culminated in a fund of just under R1 billion being raised in the private sector for municipality infrastructure.
Part of Sello’s achievements over the years includes assisting the former ZimBank to roll out their first ATM in 1997 by leading a pilot test as a Telkom SA representative; advising Saudi-Oger Telecoms in establishing Cell-C; developing and rolling out a BBBEE model for the Nedbank Group; restructuring a union investment company into a private equity-modelled entity; and raising a fund of almost R1 billion earmarked for municipality infrastructure.
Sello has published a number of research articles in accredited academic journals in SA and currently sits on the reviewing panel of two major accredited journals. He is passionate about education and is a director and founder of Mkhondo Institute of Technological Education, which provides scientific and technical goods and services to the Basic Education market.
Sello has a B.Compt, H. Dip. Tax Law, MBA, and a PhD in turnaround management, and has completed various executive development programmes, amongst others, Georgetown University in Washington DC and Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University in Chicago.
